So Near and So Far: Cuba Through Its Literature

CubaCuba is intriguing, it’s mysterious, it’s rich in cultural tradition, it’s just 90 miles off the tip of Florida, and it’s forbidden… but maybe not for long! Join us for this series of five books that explore the history, romance, political turmoil, spirit and cultural riches of this unique island country. Bowdoin College History and Latin American Studies Professor Allen Wells will be leading our discussion programs on the following five books:

Biography of a Runaway Slave, by Miguel Barnet

The Chase, by Alejo Carpentier

Dreaming in Cuban, by Christina Garcia

In the Cold of the Malecon, by Antonio Jose Ponte

Havana Red, by Leonardo Padura Fuentes

Sessions will be held monthly on Tuesday evenings at 6:30 pm in our first floor Jeanne Couture Room at LPL on the following dates: September 15, October 20, November 10, December 15 (snowdate: Dec 17), January 19 (snowdate: Jan 26)
