The Lewiston Public Library will resonate with the sounds of the season on Wednesday, Dec. 16, when the Lewiston High School Chamber Singers perform a free public concert. Titled “O Tidings of Comfort & Joy!,” the event is scheduled for 7 p.m in Callahan Hall on the library’s third floor.

According to the group’s director, Rebecca Poppke, the hour-long program is designed to be a festive mix of traditional Christmas music – including such beloved carols as “Joy to the World” and “O Holy Night” – and other songs of the season, both old and new. Adding a multicultural flavor to the evening are the pieces “Hiney Mah Tov,” which celebrates Hanukah; the rhythmic Nigerian number “Betelehemu;” and the Gloria from “Missa Kenya.”

The singers will take a decided detour from the holiday theme with their rendition of the Big Band-era jazz classic “Take the A Train,” as well as a new composition by local native Colin Britt, who graduated from Edward Little High School in 2003 and is currently enrolled in the Master of Music program at Yale University.

While the entire 35-voice Chamber Singers ensemble will present most of the pieces on the program, a 12-member subset of that group, Diaboli Musicae (which translates to “Devils of Music,” a light-hearted twist on the LHS Blue Devils sports moniker), will perform many of the more upbeat, contemporary numbers. Accompaniment will be provided on piano and percussion, with a few other “instrumental surprises” likely in store, says Poppke.

Though there is no charge for admission, the audience will be invited at the close of the show to contribute to the Chamber Singers’ “On the Road” fund, which will help defray expenses for the group’s bi-annual out-of-state concert tour planned for next spring.

The library is located at 200 Lisbon Street at the corner of Pine Street in downtown Lewiston. More information on the LHS Chamber Singers’ Dec. 16 concert there is available by calling 513-3050 or 513-3135.
