Androscoggin Historical Society photograph Display

Through mid-June, the Library will host an exhibit of Androscoggin Historical Society photographs of old Lewiston. While one or two of these may be familiar, most will probably be brand new to you. For example, there’s a shot of the original Lewiston City Building after the 1890 fire that destroyed it. Did you know that the original City Building occupied the entire block from Lisbon Street to Park Street? Here’s the evidence. And there’s a picture of the Frye House. No, not that Frye House: this is the 1812 Frye House that was situated across the street from what’s now Pedro O’Hara’s.

To augment the Historical Society display, our Reference staff prepared a list of books to borrow on Lewiston history, and added a selection of them to the exhibit. Copies of several of the books are available for purchase.

In addition, you’ll find copies of the AHS brochure and, for photography buffs, there’s Maine Historical Society literature that includes information on the MaineMemoryNet. MaineMemoryNet is a collection of over 20,000 images documenting Maine history, available on-line. The collection includes photographs provided by both AHS and LPL.
