Poetry Reading with Brian Turner

Soldier-poet and Iraq War veteran Brian Turner will be sharing his insightful poetry at LPL’s Callahan Hall on Friday, Sept 28 at 6:00 p.m.  This free public reading is part of the series, The Poet as Art, presented through a partnership between LA Arts and LPL.  This event is made possible through grants from the Maine Humanities Council and both the Harward Center for Community Partnerships and the Spanish Department at Bates College.

Brian Turner is the author of two poetry collections, Phantom Noise (2010) and Here, Bullet (2005) which won the 2005 Beatrice Hawley Award, a New York Times “Editor’s Choice” selection, the 2006 Pen Center USA “Best in the West” award, and the 2007 Poets Prize, among others. Turner served seven years in the US Army, including one year as an infantry team leader in Iraq with the 3rd Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 2nd Infantry Division. Prior to Iraq, he was deployed to Bosnia-Herzegovina in 1999-2000 with the 10th Mountain Division.

Brian’s poetry has been published in Poetry Daily, The Georgia Review, and other journals, and in the Voices in Wartime Anthology.  He holds an MFA degree from the University of Oregon.

The Friends of LPL will have Turner’s poetry books available for sale at this event and he will be conducting a signing following his reading.
