Downloadable Audiobooks
Maine InfoNet Download Library
The Lewiston Public Library is pleased to offer this new digital audiobook service for our members!Â
Download and listen to over 1,000 popular titles from your computer or portable player — even burn to CD in some cases!
In order to use the service, you must do 2 things:
- Download the Overdrive Media Console, which is a small application allowing you to download and keep track of your audiobooks. You may download the application and see system requirements at Overdrive’s website on this page, or directly download the latest Windows version here.
- You may need to update your version of Windows Media Player with the latest security upgrade. If so, you will be prompted to do so.
Now, simply have your library card ready and go to http://download.maineinfonet.org. Â Â Once there, select ‘Login’ from the top menu bar, find Lewiston Public Library on the list ‘by town’ or ‘by library name’, and enter your LPLÂ card number. Â You’re now ready to borrow digital audiobooks!
A few details of interest:
- Audiobooks are downloaded to your computer. You may then transfer them to a portable player or, in many cases, you may burn them to CD.
- Audiobooks are available in two basic formats – WMA (Windows Media Audio) and MP3. Not all books are available in both formats due to rights restrictions placed by the publishers. Generally speaking, MP3 files will play on any player and WMA files will not play on iPods. Icons attached to each book description indicate which format(s) are available.
- The Download Library Web site has a full list of compatible devices.
- The borrowing period is one week. At the end of that time, the downloaded files will not be playable on your computer. They will still be playable on your portable player (MP3 or iPod) and you will still be able to listen to any CD’s you may have burned.
- You may borrow up to two books at one time. At the end of the borrowing period the books will return to the Download Library to be available for the next borrower. If no holds are waiting and you wish to download again, you may do so.
- You may place holds on books that are checked out by others. When the book is returned to the Download Library, you will receive an email about its availability and you will have three days to check it out.
