Fines, Fees & Borrower Responsibilities

Fines for overdue adult or children’s entertainment movies are $1 per day, beginning on the first day overdue, to a maximum of $3 per movie. All other adult or teen materials, including movies classified as educational or documentary, are fined at the rate of $.10 per day after a two-week grace period, to a maximum of $5 per item. With the exception noted above, children’s materials are not fined.

As a library cardholder, you are responsible for all materials borrowed on your card.
You must pay charges for lost or damaged books and other materials, even if you loaned your card or library items to another person. Failure to return materials or to pay fines or other charges of $5 or more will result in the suspension of borrowing and computer privileges, and may result in legal action taken by the City.

If your card is lost or stolen, notify the Library immediately to have your record blocked. Teens and adults may purchase a replacement card for $1, and a child’s replacement card costs $.50.

Due to the amount of staff time required to process all requests (both in-system and out-of-system), when cardholders request items and fail to pick them up at the Library after being notified of their arrival, a $2.00 fee will be charged to their account.  Cardholders will be given at least 5 business days to pick up the item after being notified.

Research Fees

For requests outside our service area (which is Lewiston/Auburn), there is a research fee. $15 minimum per request covers the first 1/2 hour.  For questions that take longer to answer, charges are $55/hour.

Non Resident Cards

To purchase a library card (see who can get a free card), the cost is $55 for one year, $28 for six months, and $14 for three months.

InterLibrary Loan

Requests fulfilled from within the state of Maine are free. However, due to the amount of staff time required to process requests, when cardholders fail to pick up requested items after being notified of their arrival, a $2.00 fee will be added to their account for each item non picked up.

$10.00 will be charged for each out-of-system request.
