On Thurs., Nov. 10th at 6:00 p.m. in Callahan Hall we will be hosting Maine’s own Monica Wood with an author talk on her newest novel, The One-in-a-Million Boy. This program is being sponsored by the Friends of LPL as part of their 2016 annual meeting, however the event is free and open to all. A book sale and book signing event will follow Monica’s talk.

This new story from Monica Wood tells of 104-year-old Miss Ona Vitkus, a Lithuanian immigrant woman, and a young boy scout who has befriended her. Following the death of the boy, his absentee, guitar-player father returns to pick up where his son left off, learning about both Ona and the boy he never knew. The One-in-a-Million Boy is a richly layered novel of hearts broken seemingly beyond repair and then bound by a stunning act of human devotion.

Monica Wood is the author of When We Were the Kennedys: A Memoir from Mexico, Maine and of the novel Any Bitter Thing, a national bestseller and Book Sense Top Ten pick. Her other fiction includes Ernie’s Ark and My Only Story, a finalist for the Kate Chopin Award. Her first play, Papermaker, recently finished a successful 5-week run at Portland Stage Company.

Copies of the new book (and some of the older ones) will be available for sale at the LPL event and a book signing will follow the program. For more information, contact the LPL Adult & Teen Services desk at 513-3135 or LPLReference@Gmail.com  To reserve a library copy of the book to read, go to our online catalog, select the format desired and click on “Request” or call our Lending Services desk at 513-3134.
