The 2018-2019 season of the Great Falls Forum continues on Thursday, March 21st, featuring Bates College Professor of Environmental Studies Holly Ewing, with a talk entitled “History and Mysteries at Lake Auburn.”  The program will take place from 12 noon to 1 PM in Callahan Hall at the Lewiston Public Library.

Lake Auburn is the public drinking water supply for Lewiston and Auburn, but it is also a place we recreate and where lots of other organisms live.  In this Great Falls Forum, Dr. Holly Ewing will discuss some of the mysteries of Lake Auburn’s water quality and how they are related to some of the history of what has happened in and around the lake.

Holly Ewing is a field scientist within the Environmental Studies Program where she teaches courses in soils, water, the landscapes of Maine, community-engaged research, and general environmental science. Like her teaching, her research examines linkages among air, land, and water.  She is particularly interested in combining modern and historical approaches in the investigation of the drivers of changes in terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems.  In the aquatic realm, her current research projects include investigation of the role of cyanobacteria in lake processes, a study of mercury in stream food webs, and development of a smart phone app to enable citizen scientists to contribute data about lakes to a central database.  Much of her local research is focused on water quality in Lake Auburn, our drinking water supply.

Admission is free to all Forum events and no reservations are required. This program is a bring-your-own, brown-bag lunch event. Coffee, tea and bottled water will be available on site at the library.
