Great Falls Forum with Maine Attorney General Janet Mills

On Thursday, January 21, at 12 noon in LPL’s Callahan Hall, Maine Attorney General Janet Mills will be addressing the Great Falls Forum with a talk entitled, “A Week in the Life of a Maine Attorney General.”

In December of 2008 Ms. Mils was elected by the Joint Convention of the Legislature to be Maine’s 55th Attorney General, the first woman to serve in that post in Maine. She was not in the AG’s Office for the 2011/2012 term, however she was once again elected to the position in December, 2012 and has been since re-elected to another two-year term which began in 2015.

As Maine’s chief law enforcement officer, AG Mills represents the state in legal matters ranging from child support enforcement, civil rights and consumer protection to the prosecution of homicides, felony drug cases and major frauds. She was born and raised in Farmington, Maine and earned a B.A. degree from the University of Massachusetts Boston and a J.D. degree from the University of Maine School of Law.

Mills served as the first female District Attorney in New England beginning in 1980 when she was elected to serve in that role for Androscoggin, Franklin and Oxford Counties, a position to which she was re-elected three times. Her extensive resume also includes service as a state representative to the Maine Legislature among other endeavors.

In her role as AG, Ms. Mills has tackled a wide range of issues including domestic violence, heroin and opiate abuse, and the protection of elders in our state.She serves on the Criminal Law, Substance Abuse and the Energy & Environment Committees of the National Association of Attorneys General and was recently appointed Co-Chair of the NAAG Tobacco Committee.

In her Forum presentation, the Attorney General is expected to address a wide range of legal issues facing her office and the State of Maine.

The Great Falls Forum is a monthly, brown-bag speaker series featuring statewide and regional leaders in public policy, business, academia and the arts. The programs are free, open to all and no reservations are required. Coffee, tea and bottled water are provided for a donation at the event. The Forum is a co-sponsorship of the Sun Journal, Bates College and LPL.
