The Maine Folklife Center has embarked on a special project this year to highlight the diversity of fiber arts that Mainers are involved with and LPL is collaborating with the Center to help with this effort. The project is entitled, Threads of Our Lives: Maine Folk Fiber Art, and the Library will be hosting a special program and demonstration in Callahan Hall on Thurs. Sept. 22nd at 6:00 p.m. to help in spreading the word on the project.

The Sept. 22 program will feature two artists, Sally Wilson and Elaine O’Donal, in an interactive talk and demonstration. Sally is a native Mainer who learned knitting from the women in her family and is active in local fiber groups.  Elaine has been in Gorham for decades and learned how to tat from an elderly community member and then became a member of a few tatting/lace-making groups. Both will be talking about their craft and demonstrating techniques. Local community members are invited to bring their fiber work to share at the event.

During the entire month of September, the Library is featuring four large panels that were created as part of this “Threads” project. The panels illustrate how Mainers from various traditions and backgrounds are carrying on with the tradition of folk fiber art. The panels are located in the Library’s new book display area near the main entrance.
