The Lewiston Public Library is partnering with the Machiah Center and the Maine Humanities Council (MHC) to host a discussion on the book, To End all Wars: A Story of Loyalty and Rebellion, 1912-1918. Registrations are required for this free public event which will take place on Thursday, February 16 from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. in the Library’s first floor Couture Room.

To End All Wars, by Adam Hochschild, looks at World War I through British eyes, covering both the soldiers at war in France and British pacifists, war resisters, and suffragettes working to end the conflict back home in England. The book was published last May and made many “Best of 2011” booklists last month.

The February 16th program will be facilitated by Candace Kanes from the Maine Historical Society. Candace serves as MHS’s Maine Memory Network Curator and Historian and is an experienced discussion leader who has worked on numerous Maine Humanities Council programs over the years.

Registrations for the program are now being taken on a first-come, first-served basis. To register, contact the Lewiston Public Library circulation desk at 513-3134 or via email at LPL@LewistonMaine.gov . Copies of the book are available for free loan at the Library.

To End All Wars pairs an account of British soldiers at war in France during World War I with an in-depth look at the pacifists and war resisters back in England working to bring the conflict to an end. Hochschild weaves a moving and accessible tale as he focuses on a fascinating array of historical personalities including both prominent war supporters and anti-war activists.

This event is being co-sponsored by the Machiah Center and the Maine Humanities Council. The Feb 16th discussion program will be facilitated by Candace Kanes from the Maine Historical Society. Candace serves as MHS’s Maine Memory Network Curator and Historian and is an experienced discussion leader who has worked on numerous Maine Humanities Council programs over the years.

The Lewiston Public Library is partnering with the Maine Humanities Council on this event that will feature McKibben speaking live from the Westbrook Performing Arts Center talking about how, facing the greatest problem humans have ever come across, we need to be able to work effectively both in our local communities to find new ways to power our lives, and in the larger national and global arenas to make sure that unchecked global warming doesn’t defeat our best efforts. At the conclusion of the lecture, a local scholar will lead participants in a discussion about McKibben’s work and ideas, looking at how they relate to our lives, both locally here in Lewiston-Auburn and also globally.

McKibben’s talk will refer to concepts raised in his recent book, Eaarth: Making a Life on a Tough New Planet, and all participants are encouraged to read this work prior to the presentation. (Limited copies of the book are available at LPL or through inter-library-loan from other Maine libraries. To request a copy, go to the LPL catalog entry for Eaarth and click the “Request” button.)

This program will take place on Friday, January 20th at 6:00 p.m. in the Couture Room on the first floor of the Lewiston Public Library. For more information, consult the web page on the live talk or contact the LPL Adult Services desk at 513-3135 or LPLReference@LewistonMaine.gov
