My First Library Card is a joint program of the Auburn & Lewiston Public Libraries. The aim is to get a library card in the hands of every kindergarten student in the twin cities area.
How Does It Work?
A special library card and an application is passed out to children in every kindergarten class in L/A. Parents simply fill out the short application and bring the card into the library to get it activated! A library card opens the door to the combined 225,000-plus materials at both libraries.
Why?
- Reading paves the road to success. Research shows that reading aloud daily – and visiting the library often – makes children more prepared for school and life.
- Reading together is fun! Special bonds are formed when you cuddle with your kids and a book.
- Reading is contagious. When they see you with a book, children learn the joy of reading. Plus they gain important skills needed when learning to read themselves.
- Reading belongs to everyone. A card of their own gives children a sense of pride and helps them know that we all own the library!
