Read to a Dog

Lewiston Public Library is offering children the opportunity to practice their reading skills by reading aloud to Maggie, a Golden Retriever therapy dog.  Reading to a dog?  That’s right!  The chance to interact one-to-one with a trained dog and the dog’s handler is fun and motivational—another great reason to come to the library.

When children read aloud to dogs, their skills and confidence increase.  A dog is a loving and attentive audience and children are empowered to become the teachers, learning vocabulary and comprehension as they explain the story to a new canine friend.

Reading aloud to a dog is a memorable experience.  Children retain what they learn because they think and talk about it often.  Even the rules of phonetics are easier to remember when pointed out by a furry paw on the page.

To reserve a spot reading to Maggie, email us or call the Children’s Dept at 513-3133. To learn more about the training program, check out this brochure.
