  • May 21, 2015

On May 21 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. in Callahan Hall, presenter Phil Vampatella will discuss the basics of how airplanes fly. He will dispel some common myths about airplanes and aviation in general and  look at some aircraft incidents, including, in some detail, the “Miracle on the Hudson.”  Finally, he will interject some personal experiences during his 40 years of flying.

Phil Vampatella is a former military and commercial pilot with over 20,000 hours of flying experience. He flew high performance fighters in the Navy during Vietnam, logging over 200 carrier landings and more than 100 combat missions. In 1967, he joined Pan Am where he flew to destinations in Europe, Africa, the Middle East, South and Central America and the Caribbean. When Pan Am failed in 1991, he went to work for United Airlines, flying to destinations primarily in the United States.  He has been married to Patricia for 50 years. They have four children and twelve beautiful grandchildren.
