Our Oct. 15th Forum will feature Maine Public Broadcasting Network reporters Susan Sharon, Mal Leary, and Patty Wight with a presentation entitled, “From the Ebola Scare to Climate Change to Politics Under the Dome.” This program will take place at 12 noon in LPL’s Callahan Hall.

This past June, Susan Sharon, Mal Leary and Patty Wight were invited to the National Press Club in Washington, D.C. to receive the prestigious Sigma Delta Chi Award from The Society of Professional Journalists for their multi-faceted story involving Kaci Hickox, the Fort Kent nurse who treated Ebola patients in Africa. The MPBN news team worked together to cover all aspects of the story, including discovering and communicating the judge’s decision to reject most of the state’s arguments first, filing multiple stories, and conducting live interviews for NPR and other national and international media outlets.

In their GFF talk, Susan, Mal and Patty will use the Hickox/Ebola story as an example of how they do their work week in and week out, questioning authority and providing MPBN listeners with quality news and feature stories. They’ll be providing an inside look at how they develop their questions and plot out which stories to tell. The one-hour program will end with a Q & A session.

The Great Falls Forum is a monthly, brown-bag speaker series featuring statewide and regional leaders in public policy, business, academia and the arts. The programs are free, open to all and no reservations are required. Coffee, tea and bottled water are provided for a donation at the event. The Forum is a co-sponsorship of the Sun Journal, Bates College and LPL.
