Maine to Dadaab

On Thursday, October 10, 2019, come, put on a virtual reality headset and accompany Lewiston resident Shuab Mahat on a journey to Dadaab Refugee Camp in eastern Kenya. Returning to the camp for the first time since being resettled to the United States 15 years ago, Shuab is there to reconnect with his mother, siblings and grandmother. He is trying to understand why his family, along with a quarter of a million other refugees, are stuck in the desert with scarcely any possibility of getting out.

This 15-minute film explores Maine’s relationship to global human migration, asking viewers to consider a more nuanced narrative, one where home and family stretch across continents and movement between them is neither simple nor linear.

This drop-in event will take place on the first floor of the Library throughout the day, from 10:30 AM – 6:30 PM. No registration is required.

Support for Maine To Dadaab is provided by Space Gallery through the Kindling Fund. Funded in part by a grant from the Maine Arts Commission, an independent state agency supported by the National Endowment for the Arts.
