Summer Reading Game!
Libraries Rock!
The Lewiston Public Library is excited to again announce its Summer Reading Programs for all ages – kids, teens (grades 7-12 or ages 13-18), and adults (18+)! Beginning on June 25th, Lewiston Public Library will be offering the chance to not only win fabulous prizes but for adults and teens to also give back to their community, all by doing a task that is normally enjoyed without the fancy swag – reading!
To participate in our Children’s Summer Reading Program, all you need to do is read two hours per week, and at the end of each week you get a small prize, with the possibility of even bigger raffle prizes (Soccer balls, Legos, chemistry sets, and more!) If you read all 8 weeks, you will get a special prize at the end of the summer!
For those who are in the teen or adult program, if you meet the goal (books for adults and minutes for teens) you will be able to select an item to be donated in your name to a local shelter. Each week, the tiers of donation get bigger. The first week, the donation could be as simple as a single canned good and by the final week may include a donation of diapers or a case of bottled water. But if participants need a little more incentive, everyone who signs up will receive a free book, bookmark, and library branded pen! Plus those who sign-up will be automatically entered to win big raffle prizes that will be drawn at the end of the program in August.
Lewiston Public Library will again be utilizing ReaderZone.com, a free app (Apple, Android, and web based) to record their progress for those teens and adults who prefer a more technologically advanced tracking system. Don’t worry, we’ll still have the traditional paper logs for those who prefer them or have difficulty accessing the app.
Why should you participate in Lewiston Public Library’s Summer Reading Program? Reading is a relaxing, engaging, and entertaining habit! You can read books, ebooks, listen to audiobooks, or read to someone else in any genre and win awesome prizes. Summer is hot, reading is a hobby that you can enjoy without overheating- read indoors or at the pool! Have kids or teens? Summer Reading will let you connect your whole family with a shared summer experience, as well as set a good example for children and teens. Reading over the summer is also incredibly important for academic achievement. Students who don’t read over the summer can experience ‘summer learning loss,’ the loss of skills learned over the school year. Those who lose reading skills over the summer can be up to two years behind their classmates. By joining the Summer Reading Program, you can help to prevent ‘summer learning loss.’
Throughout the summer vacation months, we will be hosting free programs and events full of music, energy, and fun, and we want you and your children to attend! Some of these events include, but are not limited to:
June 25th at 11:00 in Callahan Hall, Michael’s Rockin’ Juggling Comedy Show presents a wide variety of juggling skills that delights children and teens with his dazzling acts performed precisely to upbeat music. Music is comprised of patterns and rhythms and so is juggling! It totally rocks!
July 5th at 11:00 in Callahan Hall, Conjuring Carroll Family Magic Show. In this program you’ll see many magic tricks that have a science and mathematical basis to them.
July 9th at 11:00 in Callahan Hall, Origami Stories. Christine Petrell Kallevig folds giant-sized paper as she tells stories. Each fold illustrates an action or character from the story, so by the time the story is over, a surprise origami figure is magically created. Audiences are delighted and amazed as they experience the seamless blending of these dynamic folk arts.
July 14th at 11:00 in Callahan Hall, Mr. Drew & His Animals Too. Mr. Drew will bring a menagerie of animals from around the world. Get ready for an educational show of hands-on family fun!
You will not want to miss all these amazing performers, and you don’t have to! We will give out tickets on the third floor in advance. For anyone who wants to have the best seats, getting a ticket is the perfect solution: you will get into Callahan Hall first if you have a ticket!
Activities for teens and adults include creating rock art, geology parfaits, sand art terrariums, geocaching and minecraft how-to programs, and more. Check out the Library’s website (www.LPLonline.org), Facebook (www.Facebook.com/LPLonline), and Twitter (@LPLonline), for event details. The first week to read begins on June 25th and ends on August 17th.
