On Thurs. evening, Aug. 20 at 6:30 p.m. in the Library’s Callahan Hall we will be showing the film, Prince Among Slaves, as part of a special, four-part viewing and discussion series co-sponsored by the Auburn Public Library, Maine Humanities Council and LPL. The entire series is entitled Muslim Journeys and will explore diverse perspectives on the people, places, histories, beliefs, and cultures of Muslims in the United States and around the world.

Prince Among Slaves is the remarkable true story of an African prince enslaved in the American South. Abdul Rahman Ibrahima Sori was ambushed, captured, sold to English slavers, and shipped to America in 1788. After enduring the horrendous journey, he was purchased by a struggling Mississippi farmer. Abdul Rahman’s leadership, faith, and intellect helped him survive 40 years of slavery while he fought for his freedom and that of his wife and children – a quest that ultimately led to a meeting with President John Quincy Adams.
