The Affordable Care Act (ACA), nicknamed Obamacare, is a comprehensive health insurance law signed by President Obama in 2010. On October 1, 2013 open enrollment began for Americans who currently do not have affordable health insurance options.

Get Help
There are a number of help options available.
In person
Specialists known as Navigators have been trained to provide free local help with individualized ACA questions. In Androscoggin County/Lewiston, Navigators are provided at Western Maine Community Action (WMCA). WMCA can be reached by phone at 1-855-806-7333 or email. Help is also available for Arabic, French, and Somali speakers.

Applications are available from HealthCare.gov and can be printed, filled out by hand, and mailed.
Important Dates
- October 1, 2013: Health Insurance Marketplace opens for enrollment.
- December 15, 2013: Last day to enroll to receive coverage in 2014.
- January 1, 2014: Coverage begins for anyone who registered by December 15th.
- March 31, 2014: Last day to register for health insurance before penalties kick in.
