Great Falls Forum with Maxwell Chicuta
Our featured presenter for the April 21st Great Falls Forum will be the City of Portland’s Community Development Block Grant Board Chairperson, Maxwell Chicuta, speaking on “Making Maine Communities Livable and Safe.” The free public program will take place at 12 noon in LPL’s Callahan Hall.
Chicuta’s ‘day job’ is with Maine Medical Center, working the night shift in their Engineering Department. However, it is Maxwell’s overall work ethic and his committment to the Portland area community which has put him in the limelight as a leader.
In addition to his work with the Community Development Block Grant Board, Chicuta generously volunteers with Habitat for Humanity, the American Red Cross, and the United Way of Greater Portland. And while serving in all these capacities over the last 10 years, Maxwell has found time to further his education, obtaining associate’s, bachelor’s and master’s degrees–he is now he is now pursuing a PhD program through Walden University.
However, what makes Maxwell Chicuta’s resume the most impressive is the fact that he arrived in Portland in 2003 with no money, few possessions, and unable to speak English–a refugee from the Democratic Republic of the Congo. He is now a U.S. citizen and considers his good fortune “a wonder, a miracle” and feels that it is his duty to give back to his community. He believes that working together in one accord is what makes communities livable and safe and he will be sharing those views with the Great Falls Forum audience at LPL.
The Great Falls Forum is a monthly, brown-bag speaker series featuring statewide and regional leaders in public policy, business, academia and the arts. The programs are free, open to all and no reservations are required. Coffee, tea and bottled water are provided for a donation at the event. The Forum is a co-sponsorship of the Sun Journal, Bates Collegeand LPL.
