mcgaugheyOur 2014-2015 Great Falls Forum Season opens on Friday, September 19th with Margaret D. McGaughey speaking on “How to Raise a Dangerous Criminal.” Margaret has served as a federal prosecutor for the last 35 years and over that time she has come to some interesting conclusions regarding children, their upbringing, and family factors that lead to a life of productive citizenship vs. the polar opposite–a life of crime and dysfunction.

Attorney McGaughey presented some of her thoughts on this issue in an op-ed piece in the Sun Journal last November. At her GFF presentation she will be expanding on this article and presenting potential solutions on how we can better protect our children from unstable and harmful conditions that sometimes exist within their own families. A Q&A session will follow her presentation.

McGaughey currently serves as appellate chief for the U.S. Attorney’s office in Portland. Her primary work duties involve appearing before the First Circuit Court of Appeals in Boston to defend the federal convictions and sentences imposed on criminal defendants in Maine.

All Forum program take place from 12 noon to 1 p.m. in Callahan Hall at the Lewiston Public Library, 200 Lisbon Street. Admission is free and no reservations are required. This is a brown-bag, bring your own lunch event.  Coffee, tea and water will be available on site.

The Great Falls Forum is co-sponsored by the Androscoggin County Chamber of Commerce, Bates College, the Sun Journal and LPL. For more information on this or other Forum events, contact the Library’s Reference Department atLPLReference@LewistonMaine.gov or call 513-3135.
