Highlights:
- Great Falls Forum with Cynthia McFadden: The 2020-2021 season of the Great Falls Forum concludes on Thursday, May 20th, featuring Cynthia McFadden, Senior Legal and Investigative Correspondent for NBC News, on the topic “From Maine to Madagascar (and lots of places in-between).” The program will take place from 12 – 1 PM virtually via Zoom and streamed to the Lewiston Public Library Facebook page. - #TheLewistonRead Trivia Night! Join as a family for Trivia Night on May 20th at 5:30pm and test your knowledge of mythical creatures — including, of course, DRAGONS! As part of our May 2021 city-wide reading initiative #TheLewistonRead, we are hosting an online live trivia night using Kahoot! Participants will need a tablet, smartphone, or similar device to play. The winning family will receive a signed copy of Dragons in a Bag! Email the Children’s Department for the Zoom link and passcode at LPLKids@lewistonmaine.gov
- Local Writers Read Online! Local Writers Read, a local literary reading series co-sponsored by LPL, is launching their 2021 virtual season with live-streamed readings on May 21st and 22nd. The series features Maine writers of fiction, nonfiction, and poetry. The theme for their May readings is Memory and Yesterday. The readings are free to view and do not require registration. - Virtual Babytime & Storytime! Join Ms. Jackie for our VIRTUAL weekly combo of Babytime & Preschool Storytime: a fun, interactive activity for children ages 0-5 and their caregivers that helps introduce children to the world of books, learning, and the library. Early literacy concepts such as print awareness and phonics will be introduced to parents and children as we enjoy stories, songs, fingerplays, and more. Siblings are always welcome. This weekly program will take place on Tuesdays at 10:30am via Zoom – to register, please contact the Children’s Department at 207-513-3133 or lplkids@lewistonmaine.gov.
- May Take & Make Kits: This Month’s Take & Make Kit is in full bloom with May flowers! Including a leaf maze, leaf counting printable, parts of a plant coloring sheet, tissue paper flowers craft activity, and fun butterfly and bug shapes! Our Take & Make kits are designed especially for kids ages 3-6 who are working on fine motor skills, scissor skills, ABC’s, 123’s, shapes, colors, and more! You can pick up a kit when you schedule a browsing appointment in the Children’s Department or via LPL To Go. No library card required. - Art Walk Window Display from Purple Bean Bindery: The Library has once again partnered with LA Arts to bring a new form of Art Walk to the community. This year, we are featuring art work in our Lisbon St windows which are located near the entrance to the building. From April 15th – June 15th, local artist Anna Low will have a display of her artist books available for viewing. These beautiful and unique creations can be seen from the street anytime or up close and personal during one of our browsing blocks throughout the week. Each one is different and tells its own story in a distinctive format.
- ArtVan bags are here! Thanks to a generous grant from the Lewiston Auburn Children’s Foundation, we are so excited to be able to welcome back ArtVan to the Children’s Department through take-and-make kits called ArtBags! ArtVan will be providing us with two kinds of ArtBags each month until June. We will have a limited number and will hand them out on a first-come, first-serve basis. You can pick up your very own ArtVan ArtBag when you schedule a browsing appointment in the Children’s Department or you can pick up one via LPL To Go. To schedule a browsing appointment or a pick up, please call 207-513-3133 or email us at lplkids@lewistonmaine.gov.
- The Children’s Department now has Park Passes! State Park Passes have a 24-hour checkout time and provide a free pass for one carload into any Maine State Park. Wildlife Park Passes provide a one-time discounted entry to the park and must be reserved in advance. For more information, please visit our website or call the Children’s Department at 207-513-3133
Browsing is Back! LPL is once again allow inside browsing of the 1st and 2nd floors during specific hours, including Saturdays.
Children’s Room Appointments: The Lewiston Public Library Children’s Department has appointments daily.
LPL To Go is still available! Although we are now open for browsing at certain times of day, LPL To Go is still available for hold pick-up. Simply call the Lending desk at (207) 513-3134 when you arrive and staff will check out your items and meet you at the Pine Street door.
