Great Falls Forum – What Just Happened? Reflections on the Midterm Elections
The 2026-2027 season of the Great Falls Forum continues Friday, November 20th, featuring John Baughman and Clarisa Pérez-Armendáriz with a discussion entitled “What Just Happened? Reflections on the Midterm Elections.” This free, public program will take place from 12 noon to 1 PM in Callahan Hall at the Lewiston Public Library.
John Baughman is Professor of Politics at Bates College and a Great Falls Forum favorite. He is a much-loved teacher who offers courses on political participation in the U.S., political institutions and processes, and U.S. parties and elections, among others (including a recent First Year Seminar, “Football, Fútbol, Soccer: The Local Politics of a Global Game”). His research focuses on the development of the U.S. Congress, with particular attention to the way members of the House reshaped the institution in order to respond to constituent demand. He is the author of Common Ground: Committee Politics in the U.S. House of Representatives (Stanford University Press, 2006).
Clarisa Pérez-Armendáriz is Professor of Politics and Latin American Studies at Bates and a recent recipient of the Kroepsch Award for Excellence in Teaching. Her research explores how international migration affects politics in migrants’ origin countries, especially in Mexico. She helped establish the college’s Program in Latin American and Latinx Studies. Among the courses she is teaching at Bates this year are “Political Challenges in Latin America,” “How Democracy Dies,” and “Government and Politics in Global Perspective.” Clarisa served as a US Foreign Service officer in Mexico City and India prior to coming to Bates. She also recently served on the Auburn School Committee.
