Lewiston Public Library is happy to announce that another Hands-On Food Preservation Workshop will be returning this spring due to popular demand. This time we are featuring pickled-spring-vegetables such as asparagus. This event is free to the public and will take place on Monday, May 8, 2023, from 4 to 6:30 PM in Callahan Hall at the Lewiston Public Library.

Ever wonder how to preserve all those great pickled-spring-vegetables? This hands-on food preservation workshop, taught by UMaine Extension volunteers and staff, teaches you the basic steps for canning. Participants will receive a “Preserving the Harvest” food preservation packet and learn recommended methods for preserving vegetables, the latest and safest recipes and equipment, and how to check for properly sealed jars. Please bring a potholder with you to the workshop. All other supplies with be provided to attendees. Registration is required to participate in this event due to limited space. Kate McCarty has been the Food Systems Professional at UMaine Cooperative Extension since 2009, after serving in the AmeriCorps VISTA program. She has completed the Master Food Preserver program, intensive, hands-on training in all aspects of home food preservation. Kate manages the volunteer efforts of the 60+ Master Food Preserver volunteers statewide and teaches food preservation programs in 6 Maine counties.
