The Lewiston Public Library will be hosting the Maine State Museum’s Listening Tour on Tuesday, March 29th. This free, public program will take place from 5:30 to 7 PM on Zoom.

The Maine State Museum is seeking community input to find the stories and broader themes that resonate with and reflect the many voices, interests, and identities of the people of Maine. There will be a series of discussions in different communities across the state from which the participants’ responses will inform the museum’s ongoing work. The Lewiston Public Library will be hosting one of these virtual discussions so that the people of Lewiston have an opportunity to weigh in. No prior knowledge or experience with the museum is necessary. This meeting will be recorded so that Maine State Museum staff members can capture the information you share with them. Your responses could then be used to inspire exhibits, student activities, public programs, and what kinds of things the museum collects to share with future generations. Even if you do not know much about museums or Maine history, we can still learn from you. We want to know what people living in Maine today think is important. After all, what has happened in your life is part of Maine history.

The Maine State Museum, based in Augusta, is one of the nation’s oldest state-funded museums. Generations of students have trekked there on field trips and return to visit with the next generation. While the museum is currently closed to the public for renovations, its programming has moved online and museum staff are busy reimaging the museum for its reopening. The Maine State Museum seeks to share what is meaningful about Maine and its place in the world in order to inspire people to discover Maine’s past, understand its present, and imagine its future.

Admission is free. Registration is required. In order to make sure everyone’s voices are heard throughout the discussion, attendance will be limited to 15 participants.

The Maine State Museum Listening Tour at LPL is co-sponsored by the Lewiston Public Library and the Maine State Museum. The Lewiston Public Library is located downtown at 200 Lisbon Street at the corner of Pine Street.
