PUPPET THEATER PLAY!
From September 20th to October 3rd, showcase your puppetry skills in the Children’s Department at the Lewiston Public Library in our new puppet theater stand!
A variety of puppets are available to use along with an activity station to make your own puppet to take home. The Puppet Theater Play time program celebrates the Beautiful Blackbird Children’s Book Festival in honor of Maine Children’s Author Ashley Bryan.
In addition to the puppet theater, the library will be giving away copies of children’s books selected for this year’s festival. The book giveaway is one copy per child while supplies last. The puppet stand was generously donated by local building contractor, Nate Lavoie.
The Beautiful Blackbird Children’s Book Festival, presented by Indigo Arts Alliance, celebrates Black and Black Immigrant children’s books and their creators with an annual 3,000+ book giveaway to Maine families, the production of acclaimed media and activities and live book events. The festival honors the legacy of legendary Black children’s book creator and artist Ashley Bryan and is named after his classic picture book Beautiful Blackbird. We believe that Black children and immigrant children should have the opportunity to build their home libraries and fill them with books that represent their lives and experiences. This is why we are proud to give away copies of the featured books to children served by Portland Public Housing, Portland Parks and Recreation, and the Lewiston community.

Indigo Arts Alliance embodies a multiracial approach to the rich intersections of citizenship, community-building, and creativity. Our work is in service to shifting historical injustices as a vital component of achieving equity for Black and Brown artists. We believe that artists are instrumental to doing the work of social justice in ways that are deeply grounded in lived experience and community.
The Lewiston Public Library is located downtown at 200 Lisbon Street at the corner of Pine Street and Lisbon Street.
