L. L. Bean: the Man and His Company

Past Event ....... October 27th, 2011 — 7:00 p.m.

Author James Witherell of Lewiston will be presenting an illustrated talk on his new book, L. L. Bean: the Man and His Company on Thursday evening, Oct 27 at 7:00 p.m. in the Library’s Callahan Hall.  The program is free and open to the public.

Author Jim Witherell grew up in Maine, first visiting L. L. Bean’s store when you had to climb a creaking set of wooden stairs to get to it. As an avid cyclist, hiker, mapmaker, and registered Maine Guide, he has had plenty of experience with Bean gear, including a stint working for the company.

About five years ago, he started research for a book, hoping to time his project for L.L. Bean’s 100th anniversary. “It’s been a fascinating process,” he says. “A lot of people shared their stories with me, and my research has turned up some information that the company archivist probably doesn’t know about.” His history of this iconic Maine company is full of good storytelling, interesting detail, and some surprises!

L. L. Bean was published this summer by Tilbury House, a highly-respected Maine publisher of both adult and children’s books that have won many awards over the years.  Copies of the book will be available at the LPL program ($20.00) and a book signing will follow the talk.
