Shady Brook Notecards on sale at LPL

One of the fund raising activities that the Friends of LPL are undertaking in 2017 is the printing and selling of note cards with our Marsden Hartley Shady Brook painting on them.  These cards are available for sale at the library’s first floor Lending Services Desk for a donation of $2 each or $7 for a packet of six cards. The packets can also be ordered online for $10 ($7 donation + $3 shipping). Click here for an online order.

This printing and fund raising project is being done in conjunction with a major Marsden Hartley art exhibition opening at the Metropolitan Museum of Art on March 15, 2017 entitled Marsden Hartley’s Maine. The Lewiston Public Library’s Marsden Hartley oil painting, Shady Brook, will be part of this exhibit along with dozens of other Hartley paintings and drawings from museums and private collections around the world.

Marsden Hartley’s Maine.  will  run through June 18 at the Met in New York City and then be moving up to the Colby College Museum of Art where it will be on exhibit from July 15, 2017 to November 12.

Hartley was born in Lewiston in 1877 and went on to earn an international reputation as an American Modernist and landscape painter.  Hartley painted Shady Brook in 1907 during a period in his life when he was trying to establish himself in a studio in the former Greely Building at 171 Lisbon Street in Lewiston.  Hartley presented the Lewiston Public Library with that painting later that same year.

And, stay tuned for special Hartley Exhibition events in the next several months, including a March 7 talk (6:30 p.m. in LPL’s Callahan Hall) by USM Art History professor Donna Cassidy who is one of the lead curators for the Marsden Hartley’s Maine show.
