What’s New?
  • Great Falls Forum: Criminal Justice Reform in Maine, Thursday, November 18th @ 12pm (Virtual) — In her Great Falls Forum presentation, Rep. Charlotte Warren will discuss criminal justice reform in Maine: where we’ve been, where we are, and where we need to go. She will share some highlights, including an overview of jails and prisons, Maine’s drug war, the fight to close Long Creek Youth Development Center, and police reform. Charlotte will engage the audience in what changes need to be made to create a fairer system in Maine, and how Mainers can get involved.
  • The Library will be closed on Thursday, November 11th, in honor of Veterans Day.

  • Subverted Authorities: An Examination of Hybrid Forms, Monday, November 8th @ 6pm (Virtual) — What can writers accomplish with a prose poem or flash fiction that can’t be done in more traditional poetry and short stories? Why write in the margins of genre? Join us as writers Jefferson Navicky & Claire Guyton attempt to answer these questions and read examples from their own work, including from Jefferson’s new book Antique Densities: Modern Parables & Other Experiments in Short Prose.
  • The Last Nomad: Coming of Age in the Somali Desert, Tuesday, November 9th @ 7pm (Virtual) — Author Shugri Said Salh will speak about her debut book, The Last Nomad: Coming of Age In the Somali Desert in a conversation with Mana Abdi, program coordinator at the Bates College Office of Intercultural Education. The Last Nomad was named an Apple Best Book of the Month in August 2021, and an Amazon Best Biography & Memoir Book of the Month for 2021.
  • Pop-in to the Library, Wednesday, November 10th between 11am and 1pm — The Library is offering a free popcorn making demonstration to any participants who would like to drop in for a few minutes and watch! Take home a sample after. Admission is free and no reservations are required. You can also pick up a free popcorn making kit from the Lending Desk. Just ask a staff member for your kit.
  • Vote in the 2-Sentence Horror Story Contest, voting open until November 14th — Come to the library to see our display of over 130 2-Sentence Horror Stories! You’ll be sure to get the heebie-jeebies as you read these frightening tales submitted by your friends and neighbors. Stop by to vote for your favorites or click here to vote online until November 14th. Attention: Horror is a genre that may not be suitable for all audiences. Reader discretion is advised.
  • Storytime in the Park, Tuesdays @ 10:30am
  • National Novel Writing Month (Virtual) — Write-Ins every Wednesday and Saturday in November between 9am and 11am

  • Neither Tutsi, nor Hutu: Author Talk with Prosper Ishimwe, Monday, November 15th @ 5:30pm — Author Prosper Ishimwe will speak about his book, Neither Tutsi, nor Hutu: A Rwandan Memoir, in conversation with Bates College Professor Emeritus Charles (Val) Carnegie at Callahan Hall. This free, public program will also include a book sale and signing.
  • Library Cinema Presents: No Greater Love, Tuesday, November 16th @ 4:30pm — The Library is providing a free, public screening of the documentary film No Greater Love (2015) in Callahan Hall. Dr. Chris Price, visiting assistant professor of politics at Bates College, will provide a brief introduction to the film at the beginning of the screening, focusing on the ethical complexities of conflict as they relate to American soldiers.
  • Teen Library Ambassadors, Wednesday, November 17th @ 3:30pm (Virtual) — Join us virtually on the LPL Teen Discord for a drop-in info session about becoming a Teen Library Ambassador. Do you want to plan your own program or event? Is there a manga series you think we should have? Do you want to run a gaming tournament? Do you like writing reviews, taking photos, or making videos? The library needs you!
  • Library to Close for Upgrades between November 17th and 19th.
