BLACKBIRD BEATS – AN INTERACTIVE MUSICAL PERFORMANCE
The Lewiston Public Library will be hosting a musical adventure inspired by Ashley Bryan’s beloved tale on Wednesday, October 1 at 5:30pm in Callahan Hall.
This Program is presented by the Children’s Museum & Theatre of Maine at Lewiston Public Library as part of the Beautiful Blackbird Children’s Book Festival.
This one-performer show invites children to become colorful birds from Africa, celebrating diversity and the beauty of Blackness. Through beatboxing, dancing, and playful sound-making, young audiences will help bring the story to life in an engaging, hands-on experience. Aligned with Black and Brown studies curriculum, this dynamic performance reinforces themes of self-love and community. Let’s move, groove, and shout together—because Black is beautiful, UH HUH!
The Beautiful Blackbird Children’s Book Festival celebrates Black and Black Immigrant children’s books and their creators with an annual 3,000+ book giveaway to Maine families, the production of acclaimed media and activities and live book events. The festival honors the legacy of legendary Black children’s book creator and artist Ashley Bryan and is named after his classic picture book Beautiful Blackbird. We embrace the power of play to build resilience, spark creativity, and ignite a child’s imagination. We center community in all we do. We believe curiosity inspires children to explore, build empathy, and connect with others.
