The 25th season of the Great Falls Forum continues on Thursday, February 16, featuring Maine author and retired Allagash Wilderness Waterway Supervisor Tim Caverly, and former educator and Maine Department of Conservation employee Susan Caverly, with a talk entitled “48 Hours with an Allagash Wilderness Ranger.” This free, public program will take place from 12 noon to 1 PM in Callahan Hall at the Lewiston Public Library and will also be streamed live via Zoom and the Lewiston Public Library Facebook page.
The Allagash Wilderness Waterway is a 92-mile canoe route in Maine’s Park Service. The corridor is also a nationally designated Wild and Scenic River in the National Park Service. In this Great Falls Forum talk, through scenic, historic and wildlife pictures, the audience will spend two virtual days in the bow of Tim’s canoe where they will learn about wildlife, come face to face with a host of characters, and experience the most unusual daily trials faced every day by rangers on patrol.
Tim Caverly is a Maine author of 11 books. He is a member of the New England Outdoor Writers Association, whose stories have been featured in various newspapers, magazines, and outdoor journals. Tim currently serves as a monthly columnist for The Maine Sportsman and contributes to the “Act Out” section of the Bangor Daily News. A graduate of the University of Maine at Machias, Tim worked for Maine’s Department of Conservation for 32 years, ending his career in 1999 as the Regional Park Supervisor of the Allagash Wilderness Waterway. Susan Caverly, also a graduate of the University of Maine at Machias, worked for 25 years for the Department of Conservation, afterward teaching in Millinocket. Today, Susan and Tim travel throughout New England, promoting literacy in schools by teaching and learning about Maine’s natural world. Through their “New England Reads” literacy project, the couple has presented 324 programs, reaching over 10,500 students.
Admission is free to all Forum events and reservations are only required if attending via Zoom. The Zoom link will be posted to the Library website and Facebook prior to the event. The onsite program is a bring-your-own, brown-bag lunch event.
