Lewiston Contra Dance
Folks of all ages are invited to enjoy the air-conditioned comfort of Callahan Hall at the Lewiston Public Library on Friday, July 19, during an evening of old-time New England folk dancing to a lively mix of jigs and reels played on fiddles, guitar, banjo, spoons and more. The event starts at 7 p.m. with a half-hour of extra easy dances to acquaint first-time dancers with the basic moves, and will conclude with a last waltz at 10 p.m.
Performing the music for the event are fiddlers Greg and Jessie Boardman, backed up by guitarist Chris Robley and banjo/mandolin player Don Cunningham, with a few special guest musicians also on deck. Caller Cindy Larock will lead attendees in an assortment of contra, square and circle dances similar to the ones done in rural Grange halls throughout New England nearly every Saturday night for well over a century.
“No prior dance experience is necessary, and people are invited to come either with or without a partner,” says Larock, who points out that the tradition is for everyone to freely socialize by dancing with different partners throughout the evening. Dancers are encouraged to wear comfortable shoes and, while Callahan Hall is air-conditioned, they should also bring water bottles to keep themselves well hydrated. Those who would prefer to sit out, tap their toes and listen to the music are also enthusiastically welcomed to attend.
The event, which is planned as a benefit for the library’s children’s room, carries an admission charge of $15 for adults and $5 for teens, with free admission for those age 12 and under. The performers are donating their time so that all proceeds can be used to help pay for needed renovations to the children’s room.
